The Navigation Specialist plays an integral role in ending homelessness within Marion and Polk Counties. The Specialist will work with homeless individuals and families throughout the Coordinated Entry Process, with focus on the special needs of clients entering the continuum through DHS referrals. The Specialist will be responsible for: navigating individuals seeking housing, data entry and data management, and routing clients to resources based on assessment of their needs. The Navigator's goal will be to aid in addressing immediate needs while working toward long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

Job Duties:

  • Meets with clients to determine eligibility and then aids in gathering documentation required for intake, enrollment, and financial assistance.
  • Provides direct service to participants, including case management and housing placement support to assist participants in becoming self-sufficient and overcoming barriers to accessing permanent housing.
  • Develops Stabilization Plans that identify participant needs, barriers, and strengths. Navigates participants to vital community resources.
  • Helps clients access services including food; childcare; education; mental health services; healthcare; transportation; and/or employment resources.
  • Maintains positive relationships with: DHS - Child Welfare, DHS - Self Sufficiency, Fresh Start, and ARCHES Resource Services.
  • Provides support for client-tracking, service delivery, follow-up reporting. Maintains excellent case file management.
  • Maintains compliance with all federal, state, and grant program and funding requirements, setting high standards for data quality and compliance performance, remaining in compliance with the regulations of all funding streams.
  • Works cooperatively with other MWVCAA ARCHES Project programming to ensure quality  and timely client service delivery.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in Social Services or a related field; and two years of related social service experience; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ideal candidates will possess an advanced degree with two or more years of homeless service delivery experience and mental health certifications and/or licensing.
  • Knowledge of/or experience with: the principles of coordinated assessment, working with unsheltered or vulnerable populations, as well as best practices in homeless service delivery is preferred.
  • No pre-employment drug test required - employees are only subject to drug test if they get into an on-the-job vehicular accident. 

Work Environment:

  • Close quarters, often with a homeless/public or other client population.
  • Indoor work environment with frequent interruptions and demands.

Physical Demands:

  • Required to frequently reach with hands and arms; regularly required to climb or balance; required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity for handling office equipment.
