The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is a full-time (40 hours a week) position within the Veteran Rental Assistance Program of the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency's - ARCHES Project. This program serves veterans in Marion and Polk Counties who are homeless (or at-risk of homelessness) who are affected by severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI). The primary function of the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is to support the veteran participant with activities which promote long-term housing stability.

Job Duties:

  • Finalizes client eligibility and aids in gathering documentation as required for intake, enrollment, and financial assistance.
  • Provides direct service to participants in case management and overcoming barriers to accessing permanent housing.
  • Collaborates with the program participant and VRAP team to develop individualized action plans. Identifies participant needs, barriers, and strengths in the creation of these household action plans.
  • Review the service plan and goals with the participant and coordinate them to services.
  • Provides support and assistance to participants to develop skills in Activities of Daily Living (ADL); housekeeping and maintenance of home, budgeting, meal planning, shopping, appointment scheduling and attendance, medication compliance and addressing barriers to success as a tenant.
  • Monitors participant progress and maintains detailed and up-to-date case notes. Client files are to be complete and organized.


Bachelor's degree or equivalent from four-year college or technical school; and three years of related social service experience; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Ideal candidates will possess an advanced degree with three or more years of homeless service delivery experience and mental health certifications and/or licensing. Knowledge of/or experience with: the principles of coordinated assessment, accreditation as a peer support specialist, working with unsheltered veterans, as well as best practices in homeless service delivery is preferred.

No pre-employment drug test required - employees are only subject to drug test if they get into an on-the-job vehicular accident. 

Work Environment

  • Close quarters, often with a client population experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and/or severe and persistent mental illness, and/or unpredictable behavior.
  • Indoor work environment with frequent interruptions and demands.
  • Exposure to trash and potential biohazards.
