This is a grant funded, full-time position located at the ARCHES Project. The Shelter Assistant position will be full-time (40 hours per week), located at the ARCHES Project. This position will provide direct support to ARCHES Day Center Participants many of whom are chronically homeless and experiencing barriers to service engagement.



  • A Bachelor's Degree in Human Services or a related field and two years of experience in an office related field (preference given to social-service office related experience), or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with the homeless or at-risk populations is preferred. 


  • Valid Oregon driver's license with acceptable driving record and insured vehicle available for use on the job.
  • Candidate must pass a comprehensive MWVCAA background screening prior to employment.
  • Must obtain a food handler's card.


  • Provides support services for the ARCHES Day Center, such as:
    • Collects data and inputs utilization profiles into the Health Management Information System (HMIS).
    • Assists with the Day Center Shower & Laundry services and the distribution of incoming mail.
    • Ensures the safety of all guests and volunteers by implementing statewide shelter and occupational standards.
    • Purchases and sorts supplies, including donations.
    • Fills in for reception staff when needed, including answering phones as well as greeting and directing visitors.
    • Maintains consistent upkeep of the Day Center space, including regular cleanings.
  • Deliveries high quality customer services with a focus on hospitality.
  • Applies crisis intervention and employs de-escalation techniques and makes quick decisions in response to guest or client incidents.


  • Close quarters, often with a client population experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and/or severe and persistent mental illness, and/or unpredictable behavior.
  • Indoor work environment with frequent interruptions and demands.
  • Exposure to trash and potential biohazards.

Physical Demands:

  • Required to frequently reach with hands and arms; regularly required to climb or balance; required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity for handling office equipment.
