Head Start Bus Drivers transport children, parents, and staff.  Multiple routes, consistent route schedules, and working with other team members to support all aspects of the program. 12 month positions available.


  • Transports passengers on program-related activities by the most direct route, safely, and efficiently.
  • Keeps assigned vehicle clean and equipped for emergencies.  Reports any malfunctions.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records within allotted time lines to include class rosters, routes, mileage (as assigned), absentee child tracking and others as assigned.        


  • Six months of prior work experience as a school bus driver is required for the driver position (but not the trainee position.)
  • Satisfactory driving record for the previous three years.
  • Prior work experience in the field of Early Childhood Education is preferred.


  • Insured vehicle available for use on the job or acceptable alternative.
  • Pass initial physical examination and DOT physical examination as required.
  • Registration with the Central Background Registry of the Child Care Division.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Must possess or obtain within 30 days a current, valid Class 'B' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with: School Bus driver license endorsement ('S' Endorsement). Passenger driver license endorsement ('P' Endorsement). Successfully pass the DMV Air Brakes Knowledge test and have an Oregon School Bus Driver's Certificate.
  • Must have a current Medical Examiner's Certificate card and First Aid/CPR Certification or ability to obtain.

Physical Demands

  • Required to frequently reach with hands and arms; regularly required to climb or balance; occasionally required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus and depth perception.
  • Physical ability to quickly evacuate children from the school bus in an emergency.
