The Family Educator works with families in a home-visit setting to provide resource and referrals, assist with family goal setting and self-sufficiency. Works with other team members to provide services in the areas of: Education, Health, Nutrition, Mental Health, Disabilities, Family Services and Parent Involvement. Assists families in becoming an advocate for their children by encouraging involvement in their education. Support families in becoming active members of their communities.


Education and/or Experience

     Family Educator 1: High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED); 2 years' experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in social work or related field. Employee must also have the ability to work toward a related Associate's Degree, and/or obtain a credential in social work, human services, family services, counseling or a related field 18 months after hired.

     Family Educator 2: Associate's Degree in social work or a related field; and 1 year experience in social service delivery or case management. Employee must also have the ability to obtain a credential in social work, human services, family services, counseling or a related field, 18 months after hired.

     Family Educator 3: Bachelor's degree in social work or a related field; and 2 years' experience in social service delivery or case management

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to complete Family Services Credential within 18 months, if required.
  • Registration with the Office of Child Care's Central Background Registry.
  • Valid Oregon Driver's License and insured vehicle available for use on the job with an acceptable  drive record, or acceptable alternative.
  •  Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification and Food Handler's Card.


  • Conducts home visits with assigned families and maintains regular communication through telephone and in-person conversations.
  • Assists parent/guardians in establishing family goals and action plans, working closely with families and other agencies to coordinate and support progress toward goals
  • Documents all interactions with parents in ChildPlus.
  • Assists the Health Advocates by supporting parent/guardians in meeting their children's health requirements, including completion of well-child exams and oral health assessments, and necessary follow up to exams and vision/hearing screenings.
  • Assists families in obtaining and maintaining health insurance, medical and dental homes.
  • Partners with parent/guardians to plan and conduction monthly site parent meetings, providing training and support to parent/guardians in facilitation of the meetings.
  • Utilizes parent input and program requirements to arrange for community presentations for parent meetings.
  • Monitors children's attendance, and works with families in accordance to procedures to facilitate good attendance.
  • Facilitates weekly classroom staffing meetings with teaching team to discuss each child and family monthly, including updates about current needs or concerns for the child or parent/guardian, and reviewing their attendance for the month.
  • Participates in community meetings as assigned to build partnerships and connect with resources for families.
  • Supports the site team as needed to provide classroom coverage, bus riding, language support, or other areas.

Physical Demands

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity for handling office equipment.
