The Parent Developmental Language Support is a temporary position for Head Start parent/guardians, working in the Head Start or Early Head Start classroom, to provide Spanish language support in classrooms that do not have bilingual staff. The Parent Developmental Language Support position may also provide language support on bus rides and for home visits and/or conferences.

Job Duties:

  • Provides language support to children and staff, and between staff and parents. This may be in the classroom, on the bus, or during home visits or conferences.
  • Maintains a spontaneous and flexible attitude in meeting children's' individual needs, encouraging children to verbalize their own feelings and ideas.
  • Ensures safety in the classroom at all times, with appropriate supervision of children, utilizing the transition and counting form and procedure. Ensures children are released only to parent/guardians or authorized adults.
  • Engages children in conversations, creating an extension of the classroom with games and learning opportunities.
  • Supports the bus driver as requested with checking to ensure children are released to parent/guardians or authorized adults, checking identification, recording pick up and drop off times, and standing at the back of the bus to observe safe back-ups.
  • Documents and relays information from conversations with parents to the Teacher or Family Educator.

Qualifications:

  • Current Head Start or Early Head Start parent.
  • Current Head Start or Early Head Start parents are not required to have a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED), and will be supported to achieve one as part of the position.
  • Registration with the Office of Child Care's Central Background Registry.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to obtain Food Handler's Card.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, verified through testing.
